Atlanta's sneaker enthusiasts have a new reason to celebrate as The Athlete's Foot, in partnership with Adidas, rolls out a limited-edition sneaker that pays homage to the city. These custom kicks are set to drop in time for "404 Day," an annual event that honors Atlanta's vibrant culture and community. The shoes are adorned with a bold "404" logo, an Adidas emblem designed like a peach, and various Atlanta-inspired details, reported Fox 5 Atlanta.
The excitement around these kicks is not just about footwear but also the cultural pride on display. The release is a part of the 404 Day celebrations that encompass more than shoes; it's about the arts, the people, and a sense of unity. The shoes were launched at an event where more than half of the stock had sold before the larger crowds started to arrive. "A lot of the things we do are in Atlanta," an organizer told Fox 5 Atlanta during the store's busy launch party. "Come out and have a good time with us."
Noteworthy in this collaboration is the role of The 404 Collective, a dynamo of Black-owned businesses in Atlanta that have come to symbolize a broader ethos of cooperation and creativity. Comprised of Butter ATL, Atlanta Influences Everything, Finish First Marketing Agency, and the Trap Music Museum, the collective has its origins in 2022's informal partnerships. Butter ATL and Atlanta Influences Everything started the 404 Day celebrations back in 2020, only to grow more cohesive over time. "We were all doing work individually, but we saw an opportunity to come together and create something bigger than what we could achieve alone,” Brandon Butler, founder, and CEO of Butter ATL, told The Atlanta Voice.
This sneaker collaboration is special, as it marks the first direct partnership between a brand and the holiday's organizers. Adidas sought to work closely with local influencers to infuse cultural authenticity into the design, a move that distinguishes these sneakers from previous 404 Day releases. "We collaborated many times, met with Adidas' product and material teams, and created something that truly reflects the city," Darius Billings, vice president of marketing and community engagement at The Athlete's Foot, explained to The Atlanta Voice.
Beyond the limited-edition Superstar sneaker, the 404 Collective and the city of Atlanta also teamed up for the 404 Parade, showcasing the collective's ability to galvanize the city's energy and craft an experience that extends beyond material goods. The parade demonstrates the collective's commitment to not just moving products but also to moving culture forward. The sneaker will be available beginning Wednesday at select Athlete's Foot locations in metro Atlanta, followed by a wider release today. "This shoe is a celebration of everything that makes this city special," Butler stated in an interview with The Atlanta Voice.
