Washington City, Utah, has become the scene of a tragedy that resonates beyond its borders, following the murder of Andreea Mottram, a woman whose life and work had a global impact. Mottram, who would have turned 48 on March 29, was found stabbed to death in a Washington City vacation rental by a cleaning crew. The incident shocked the community, not only for its brutality, Mottram suffered 12 stab wounds to her torso, but also because the accused were two teenagers with deep ties to the victim. One of the suspects, 16-year-old Mihaela "Bella" Gabriela Sorescu, is Mottram's adoptive daughter; her co-accused is 17-year-old Abigael "Jay" Paige Flanagan.

In documents that were recently unsealed, KUTV reports that the teens have been charged with first-degree felony murder, alongside charges of second-degree felony obstruction of justice and second-degree felony theft of a car. This decision follows the apprehension of the suspects, who were initially considered flight risks, having allegedly fled the scene in a car that Mottram had rented. The specifics of their crimes hold a particular poignancy, as the suspects were likely the last ones to see the victim alive, with no sign of forced entry to the property.

Mottram, an advocate for people living with disabilities and for refugee rights, was a co-founder of various organizations. She played an influential role in the establishment of the Chicago-based American Romanian Coalition for Human and Equal Rights (ARCHER) and a prime advocacy group for autistic individuals in Romania, inspired after her two biological sons were diagnosed on the spectrum. According to  FOX 13, she also used her voice to advocate for the Roma people and discussed themes of love and family in a video for ARCHER.

As the investigation into the murder continues, further distressing details have emerged. Authorities discovered a knife with trace amounts of blood on the property, along with personal items such as cell phones and a wallet in an apparent attempt to conceal evidence. The discovery of Sorescu's diary, in which she allegedly expressed hatred for her mother and a desire to kill her, adds a chilling dimension to the case. Despite the heinous nature of the crime, Utah law stipulates that the suspects, due to their age, cannot face the death penalty or life in prison without parole. "At this time, there is probable cause to suspect that the victim was stabbed to death by Jay and/or Bella and that both are criminally responsible," as obtained by ABC 4.
