A shooting during an attempted carjacking at a Frayser shopping center has left an apartment security guard injured. According to Action News 5, the Memphis Police Department reported that the incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. yesterday when the suspect approached the victim as she was entering her Mercedes E350. The armed male fired multiple shots, striking the security guard.
The guard, who works at the nearby Ridgecrest Apartments, managed to return fire before the assailant fled the scene. It is believed that she might have hit the suspect. The Ridgecrest Apartments have been recognized as a frequent site for police activity, with officers responding to over 80 calls this year, as noted in a report by WREG. Meanwhile, the suspect made his escape towards those same apartments, which are adjacent to the shopping center.
Further details emerged from WREG, revealing that video footage captured the suspect waiting outside a Subway restaurant before targeting the woman. A witness described the suspect as a teenager, and security personnel from the Ridgecrest Apartments reported prior confrontations with the young individual, who frequented the complex on his bicycle. The area experienced at least three separate shootings on the same night, reflecting an ongoing pattern in the community, which has recorded 10 homicides to date this year.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rushed to Regional One in critical condition. The Memphis Police Department urges anyone with information about the identity or whereabouts of the gunman, who was last seen wearing a white shirt, black pants, and black shoes, to contact CrimeStoppers at (901) 528-CASH, as stated by FOX13 Memphis.
