Atlanta residents, take note: a significant road closure is scheduled to start April 21 and will last until early June. Specifically, the intersection of Woodbine Avenue SE and Montgomery Street SE will be off-limits to vehicles from 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, continuing until 9:00 a.m., on June 9. This closure is to allow for underground infrastructure improvements by the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) and the Department of Watershed Management (DWM), according to an announcement on the ATLDOT website.
During this period, drivers will need to follow detour routes. Westbound travelers on Woodbine Ave SE should turn right onto Anniston Ave SE, then left onto Hosea L. Wiliams Dr NE, and left again onto Whitefoord Ave SE. Those heading eastbound will turn left onto Whitefoord Ave SE, make a right onto Hosea L. Wiliams Dr NE, and then a right onto Anniston Ave SE. Southbound drivers on Montgomery St SE are directed to turn right onto Meridan St SE, and then a left onto Whitefoord Ave SE.
While the intersection is closed to through traffic, pedestrians won't be sidelined. Sidewalks along Woodbine Ave SE will remain open, ensuring foot traffic can continue unabated throughout the project's duration. This should come as a relief for those who frequent the area on foot, demonstrating that infrastructure work can progress while still accommodating pedestrian needs.
ATLDOT has made it possible for residents with questions or concerns about the road closure to get in touch. Reach out to them at: [email protected] for any inquiries. As Atlanta navigates these temporary changes, keeping the community informed and maintaining public access, where possible, reflects the city's commitment to both progress and people.
