The Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission (BMCHRC) has sparked inspiration among local students with their annual Human Rights Art & Essay Contest. This year's challenge, themed around the strength diversity brings to community, saw nearly 100 bright young minds from seven local schools participating. The students, ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade, expressed their thoughts and creativity through art and essays, a testimony to the importance of inclusion and empathy in their nascent worldviews.
According to an announcement from the City of Bloomington, the contest aimed to elevate the value of human rights within the community, particularly those emphasizing unity and understanding. Acknowledging the children's efforts, twelve winners were chosen by BMCHRC Commissioners, with Amy Jackson and Stephen Coover appraising the art submissions, while Sharon Baker and Lilliana Young critiqued the essays. These students generated works that not only showcased their skills but also conveyed profound messages on diversity's impact.
The winners, divided into two categories based on grade levels, presented a wide array of perspectives through their artwork and writings. First place in the K-2 art category was awarded to Lena Gjerdingen, a second grader from Templeton Elementary, while Rain Yi, a fifth grader from Arlington Heights Elementary, took the top spot in the Grades 3-6 category.
On the essay front, the young voices shined with William Alhosainat, a second grader from Rogers Elementary, taking first place for the Grades 2-3 category. The older students in Grades 4-6 were equally impressive, with Imogen Hall from Unionville Elementary capturing first place with her articulate insights. It was during the celebration ceremony where, at City Hall on April 24 from 5-6 p.m., all participants will be recognized and have their works displayed through April 24 in the City Hall Atrium.
Invitations have been extended to the general public and participants to attend the ceremony where these heartfelt expressions of diversity and strength can be appreciated more fully.
