A middle school custodian in Broward County was arrested this week on allegations of possessing and uploading child pornography. Jaime Rivas, 45, who served at Indian Ridge Middle School located at 1355 S. Nob Hill Road in Davie, is now facing multiple charges. According to NBC Miami, Rivas is charged with nearly a dozen counts related to the possession of child sex conduct material found on his computer.

Detectives from the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children task force were led to Rivas' Google account after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in June 2024. Jail records show that upon executing a search warrant at Rivas' home, authorities discovered over 100 images and/or videos depicting sexual acts involving children. Rivas' bond was set at $82,500, and Broward Circuit Judge Corey B. Friedman mandated him to wear a GPS monitor, should he post bond, as per a report by Local 10 News. Furthermore, he is to have no internet access and must avoid any contact with minors.

The investigation uncovered 21 "unique files" within Rivas’s account, which included disturbing content of male and female children, ranging in ages from 5 to 15 years old, engaging in sexual acts with other children and adults. These findings were described in detail by Local 10 News. In response to the grave situation, Indian Ridge Middle School Principal Ian Murray issued a statement to parents: "Good afternoon Jaguar families. This is Principal Murray calling to make you aware that an employee who works as a custodian at our school has been arrested by law enforcement. I want you to know the individual has been reassigned by the School District away from our school and students pending the outcome of the matter. Providing our students with high-quality learning opportunities in a safe, secure environment is our priority. We appreciate your continuing support and partnership in your child’s education. Feel free to contact my office if you have questions or concerns."

Rivas remains held at the Broward Main Jail on bond. According to WSVN, he faced Judge Friedman and was charged with 10 counts of possession of a depiction of a child in sexual conduct. There has not yet been any indication from authorities that Rivas' alleged criminal activities are directly connected to his employment at the school. The school district has taken precautionary measures to distance Rivas from the school and students while the investigation continues. As details unfold, further updates will be provided by law enforcement and school officials.
