Calumet City is mourning the loss of Deputy Fire Chief Pete Bendinelli, age 48, who passed away this Monday at his home in Dyer, Indiana, after a year-long battle with an illness. As FOX 32 Chicago reported, Bendinelli's career spanned nearly three decades, and he was regarded by Calumet City Mayor Thaddeus Jones as "the crown jewel of our Fire Department." Jones, in his remembrance, shared that Bendinelli was lauded as "a best-in-class executive firefighter."

Remembered for his extensive knowledge and application of fire protocols, Bendinelli began his profound journey with the Burnham Fire Department, later transitioning to work for the Midlothian Fire Department before finally setting his roots in Calumet City in 1998. As detailed by WGN-TV, the deputy chief was celebrated for his passion for mentorship, notably offering his expertise to burgeoning firefighters throughout southern Cook County.

Bendinelli's educational accomplishments include a master’s degree from Indiana University Northwest and an Executive Fire Officer (EFO) certification from the National Fire Academy in 2023, as per WGN-TV. He was also one of only two recognized as legacy graduates in the EFO program, a rare honor he shared with friend Matthew Berk. His leadership extended to crises, exemplified when he spearheaded the rescue operations during the 2023 floods, earning regional acclaim for his performance.

Fire Chief Glenn Bachert reflected on the legacy Bendinelli leaves behind, stating to FOX 32 Chicago, "His footprint within our ranks will always be treasured and never forgotten." Bachert continued, "I will miss him not only as my Deputy Chief, but more importantly as my friend." Public visitation is scheduled today, April 4, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Faith Church in Dyer, Indiana. Further, a funeral service will take place on Saturday, April 5, at 10 a.m., also at Faith Church. Bendinelli is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their two daughters, Mariana and Mia.
