Residents of Cambridge, brace yourselves for the upcoming buzz of construction as CenterPoint Energy embarks on a significant project to upgrade the local natural gas infrastructure. Starting on April 16, the utility company plans to safely and efficiently replace aging natural gas mains with modern plastic piping, according to a statement released by CenterPoint Energy. The initiative aims to enhance the system's safety and reliability, ensuring that residents continue to receive the energy they need without any added cost to them.
The collaboration with the City of Cambridge is expected to span a few months, during which traffic disruptions are anticipated. CenterPoint has disclosed that these will largely consist of street parking restrictions, one sidewalk closure at a time, and possible lane shifts. To seamlessly accommodate residents, access to homes will be diligently maintained even as construction unfolds. The public utilities that exist underground will be marked out with flags and spray paint, and residents are asked to similarly mark any private lines they may have installed.
Another aspect of the project involves service line and meter work. Residents will be notified via postcard before a CenterPoint technician is scheduled to arrive. Work for most properties includes removing sidewalk panels and boring service lines from the sidewalk to the house. For those with indoor meters, appointments will be made to move them outside, while those with existing outdoor meters will be informed prior to any service line replacement or connection to the new main, as per CenterPoint Energy's bulletin.
Restoration work, the final step, will follow weeks after the completion of other construction processes. It will address the restoration of roads, sidewalks, boulevards, and lawns affected by the project. The utility crews will ensure that temporary restoration measures are put in place to maintain the area's livability. CenterPoint Energy extends its thanks to the public for their patience and understanding, acknowledging the disruption but emphasizing the long-term benefits of infrastructure continuity.
