Motorists and pedestrians alike, mark your calendars. The City of Carmel is about to embark on an infrastructure update that may shake up your routine. The intersection of East 96th Street and North College Avenue is getting a new roundabout, as conveyed by a city announcement. Scheduled to start on or after next Monday, this will be the City of Carmel's 156th roundabout and aims to improve safety and ease the flow of traffic.
With construction ready to initiate this May, residents can expect to see raised pedestrian crosswalks – a measure designed to increase foot traffic safety. Bradley Pease, the City Engineer, touted the project's significance in a statement, explaining "This project represents more than just another roundabout—it’s a vital improvement to safety and connectivity at one of our community’s major gateways." While raising the standard for safety at this major hub, the roundabout will also serve as a precursor to further changes planned for North College Avenue, promises the City of Carmel's release.
Expected to wrap up by July, the roundabout's completion will coincide with the next stage of enhancements. These include a stretch north of I-465 where North College Avenue will undergo a series of landscaping improvements, stormwater system upgrades, and pedestrian pathways expansion to foster better neighborhood connections.
Commuters concerned about potential traffic snarls need not worry too much. The city has thought ahead and clearly marked several detour routes will be in place to manage construction side effects. According to the notice, primary detour options include 91st Street, Spring Mill Road, and 106th Street. For those seeking alternative paths, additional routes are available via Westfield Boulevard and U.S. 31. All aimed at keeping the daily grind relatively uninterrupted while the infrastructure metamorphosis is underway.
