A tragic incident in Casa Grande has left the community mourning the loss of 81-year-old Eva Berger, who was hit and killed by a city transportation van. According to FOX10 Phoenix, Berger, known affectionately as "big mom," was struck by the van after being dropped off at her home near Amarillo and 3rd streets on March 31.
Greg, Berger's grandson, revealed in a heartrending interview with FOX10 Phoenix that his grandmother "got ran over twice" by the van. Berger, who had been a familiar face and loved by many for over 25 years in the community, regularly attended activities at Dorothy Powell Senior Adult Center. In the aftermath of the tragedy, family members have swiftly come together to remember her vibrant spirit and impact on their lives and the community as a whole.
Adding to the harrowing details, 12News reported Berger was struck by the transport van and was stuck underneath the vehicle, necessitating the use of special tools to lift the vehicle and retrieve her. Tragically, she passed away en route to the hospital.
Daasha Higgins, a close family friend, questioned the circumstances of the accident in a statement obtained by 12News: "I just want answers like, how do you not see her? You dropped her off and you mean to tell me that you did not wait to see that woman in her yard and you hit her?"
In response to the incident, the city of Casa Grande expressed its sorrow and announced that counselors will be available to support staff and visitors at the Senior Center. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) is now investigating to decide if the driver will face charges, as per 12News.
