Double Rainbow Ice Cream (415 Castro Street) has closed its Castro scoop shop after nearly five years.

According to a sign posted in the window, Double Rainbow's last day was March 31.

Double Rainbow's closure comes one week after Castro Fountain closed its ice cream shop after eight years in the neighborhood.

"After much reflection, we've made the incredibly difficult decision to close the doors of our Castro scoop shop," wrote Double Rainbow.

Double Rainbow CEO Taryn Segal did not respond to Hoodline's request for comment.

The scoop shop opened in 2020 just two doors down from the original Double Rainbow location in the 1970s. (That space is now home to Hot Cookie.)

Double Rainbow was founded by childhood friends Michael Sachar and Steven Fink in 1976. As the story goes, the ice cream shop was named after a double rainbow that appeared on the day Sacher and Fink signed the lease — September 28, 1976. Segal, the daughter of late co-founder Michael Sachar, has been the president and CEO since 2013.

Double Rainbow kept it simple with cups, cones, pints, and shakes. On a recent visit by a Hoodline reporter, the ice cream display cabinet and furniture had already been removed.

"While this chapter is closing, Double Rainbow will continue to bring the best ice cream and frozen desserts to you throughout the Bay Area," said Double Rainbow.

While Double Rainbow and Castro Fountain have closed, anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth can stop by the recently opened Oishii Matcha for some sweet treats.
