The City of Chandler is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War's end with a special event called "Freedom, Hope, Future." The event aims to honor Vietnam veterans and celebrate the Vietnamese culture that has become an integral part of the community. Councilmember Matt Orlando stated, "This event is dedicated to our Vietnam veterans, recognizing their sacrifice and valor." He also acknowledged the important role veterans played in helping establish a strong Vietnamese presence in Chandler, where many refugees have made their homes, according to the City of Chandler.
Initiated by Vietnamese refugees in Chandler, the councilmember worked with the community to create an event that honors both veterans and the immigrant community. Chantal Hong Nguyen VanKlompenberg, a founding community member, shared in a press release: "My family has lived in Chandler for decades, and we are excited to showcase the vibrant Vietnamese community that has flourished here since the Vietnam War." The event will celebrate veterans and recognize the lasting impact they have had on Vietnamese refugees, as reported by the City of Chandler.
On April 26, from 9 a.m. to noon, Chandler City Hall will host an event celebrating Vietnamese culture and honoring veterans. The event will include storytelling from veterans and refugees, dance performances by Basha High School’s Asian Cultural Ethics group, and food samples from local Vietnamese restaurants. Family-friendly activities will be offered by the Chandler Public Library and Chandler Recreation. The Chandler Museum staff will be available to discuss the oral history process and help schedule sessions for Vietnamese community members to record their stories. Vietnam veterans will receive 50th-anniversary challenge coins. East Chicago Street will be closed for the event, with free parking available at 240 S. Washington St. "Attendees will become part of this important story." For more details, visit the City of Chandler's website.
