The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert after a string of burglaries were reported in the neighborhoods of West Ridge, Edgewater, and Rogers Park. The suspect targeted coin-operated machines in building laundry areas and managed to pry them open to steal the coins. A statement obtained by the CPD specified the details of the crimes and provided an offender description.
Several incidents were noted, occurring at different times and locations within the 24th District. Notably, on March 21, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a burglary took place on the 2200 Block of West Morse Ave in West Ridge. Similar events unfolded on the 7400 Block of North Ridge Blvd. on April 1, the 5900 Block of North Kenmore, and the 6100 Block of North Winthrop in Edgewater on April 12 and April 19, respectively. During these episodes, exterior doors were pried open and entry was made specifically into the laundry areas.
The suspect is described as a male, estimated to be between 35 to 45 years old, 5'10" tall. He was last seen wearing dark pants coupled with a black knit hat and a tan jacket, or inversely, a black jacket with tan-colored pants. The clarity of these details about his appearance were emphasized in hope that community members might recognize or recall encountering the individual.
In response to the burglaries, authorities are urging the public to maintain awareness of their surroundings and to be vigilant for any suspicious activities or individuals. "Be aware of your surroundings," the police advised, and they stressed the importance of not resisting during a robbery and of avoiding pursuing fleeing assailants. Detailed characteristics of the offender, such as "scars, acne, teeth, tattoo, etc." should be remembered if possible. Engaging with witnesses and securing their contact information is also encouraged. Importantly, if an incident occurs, the CPD stressed dialing 9-1-1 immediately, requesting residents to remain on the scene if safe to do so, and to refrain from touching anything until police arrive, as this could preserve crucial evidence.
