Tragedy struck Chicago's South Side as two students suffered gunshot wounds in separate incidents only hours apart on Tuesday, with one succumbing to his injuries. Eighteen-year-old Treyvon Winfield, identified by family members, was shot just after 8 p.m. near Morgan Park High School, according to a report by NBC Chicago. The assailant approached Winfield on the 1000 block of West 115th Street and opened fire, with the teen later dying at Roseland Hospital. "My son was a good person, a good child. He was getting ready to graduate from high school," his father, Albert Winfield, told NBC Chicago, signaling an excruciating loss felt by those left behind.
Hours prior, a 17-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting just steps away from Chicago Vocational High School, as detailed by CBS News. The teenager was standing near the 2000 block of East 87th Street when a van pulled up, and someone inside fired shots at him. Despite being injured, the victim made it to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital and was reported in fair condition. However, no arrests have been made in connection with either incident.
In the aftermath of the shootings, the community grapples with questions and sorrow. "A sad day for a family who was looking forward to prom and graduation and looking forward to all the things that young people should look forward to. And unfortunately, the family is out here crying and distressed," Pastor Donovan Price expressed in a statement obtained by CBS News. Investigations into both shootings by Chicago police are ongoing as the city confronts another spike in its long history with gun violence.
