Early on a recent Friday morning, a shooting in Oak Park, Illinois led to the death of a man and subsequently to the arrest of a Chicago resident. Oak Park police reported to NBC Chicago that 20-year-old Jabari McGee is now facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the incident that claimed the life of 54-year-old Corey Gates of South Holland, Illinois.
According to the police statement, officers found Gates unresponsive around 1:30 a.m. after responding to shots fired in the 600 block of South Boulevard. He was brought to Loyola University Medical Center, and sadly, he later passed away. A witness at the scene described seeing about five males, all dressed in black, fleeing the area, an account detailed by CBS News Chicago. This led to the detention of six individuals—three adults and three minors—matching the witness's description.
CBS News Chicago further reports that while McGee remains in custody, the two other adults and the minors have since been released without charges. The release of the minors occurred on Friday, with the adults following on Saturday. Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue to probe the circumstances behind the violent event.
The investigation by Oak Park police into the shooting remains active.
