Chicago authorities have apprehended Iryna Kalach, a 39-year-old resident of the 2300 block of W. Grand Ave., in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left a 66-year-old woman dead. After an intensive search, members of the Chicago Police Department, assisted by the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, took Kalach into custody on Thursday, as confirmed by the Chicago Police Department.
The tragic incident occurred on January 24 on the 700 block of N. Oakley Blvd., where Kalach allegedly struck the pedestrian and then fled the scene without fulfilling her legal and moral obligations to report the crash or provide aid to the victim. Charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death, Kalach faces additional charges—a misdemeanor for the failure to give information or render aid, and citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failing to exercise due care, and for failure to yield to a pedestrian.
The court has scheduled a detention hearing to take place at 2600 S. California on Friday, just a day following her apprehension by law enforcement. At this time, no additional details regarding the case or circumstances leading to Kalach's arrest have been released.
