A tragic event has unfolded in Chicago's West Town neighborhood, where 39-year-old Iryna Kalach has been charged with a felony count for leaving the scene of a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of 66-year-old Halyna Hudzan. According to a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, the alleged incident took place in late January as Hudzan crossed the intersection at Oakley Avenue and Chicago Avenue.
Authorities claim that after striking Hudzan, Kalach, who at the time was transporting her child to school, proceeded to drive over Hudzan’s body twice before dragging it under her vehicle. Despite these serious allegations, Kalach's lawyer contends that there is no conclusive proof that she was aware of hitting someone. "This is not a flight scenario," the defense attorney argued, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, referencing Kalach's later actions of parking her vehicle and continuing with her daily routine.
The incident resonates with particular poignancy within the community due to Hudzan's connection to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. Her husband has served there as a pastor for years, making the tragedy a heartbreaking loss for the parish community. Kalach is not only facing charges for the hit-and-run but was also cited for driving an uninsured vehicle and for failing to yield to a pedestrian, as per ABC7 Chicago.
