Sergio Josue Palomera, a 23-year-old from Chula Vista, entered a guilty plea in federal court acknowledging his involvement in a high-speed chase that resulted in the deaths of two undocumented immigrants he was transporting; this event mirrors the perilous human consequences that can arise from attempts to cross the U.S.–Mexico border.
The chase began on October 22, 2024, when Border Patrol agents detected Palomera loading two individuals near the border in Otay Mesa, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, which was surveilling the area using remote video; Palomera appeared to comply with the agent who attempted to pull him over but suddenly accelerated onto State Route 905 driving through a red light, and in a moment of panicked flight, he lost control of his vehicle—whereupon it rolled over, leading to one immigrant's instant death. Another's later in the hospital due to a severe head trauma.
During this pursuit, Palomera reached speeds over 110 mph in a zone designated for 65 mph, a reckless act that ultimately had dire outcomes, as cited in the U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
Following the crash that ended the chase and the lives of the immigrants, Palomera now faces a maximum penalty of death or life in prison and a $250,000 fine for the charge of 'Transportation of Certain Aliens Resulting in Death' and is scheduled for sentencing on July 2 before U.S. District Judge Todd W. Robinson, in a case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Fawcett.
