A Clayton County gas station clerk was fatally shot in an attempted robbery this past Friday, a tragic event that has shaken the local community and spurred a police investigation to find the perpetrator. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, police received reports around 11 p.m. of the shooting at the Circle K on Highway 85. The victim, identified by customers and fellow employees as "Muhammad", was found dead from a gunshot wound to the back.
Witnesses described the suspect as a masked individual who entered the store with a firearm with the intention to rob the establishment. Upon shooting the clerk, the suspect fled in a black Dodge Journey with no visible license plates. The neighboring business owner, Joe Kossi, expressed his shock to FOX 5 Atlanta, stating, "I’m surprised to hear something happened near to me. I just – we just have a new restaurant here, and it can happen to anybody!"
While details are still emerging, a customer who wished to remain anonymous paid tribute to the slain worker, telling FOX 5 Atlanta, "Muhammed was a great guy for the community. Muhammad was laid back. He was patient with his customers. God, I hate that happened to Muhammad. That's crazy. People need to get a job and just make their own money. Stop taking from hardworking people. The man works overnight to take care of his family, and it's just a sad situation," the customer said. "If you were short anything, Muhammad would come out his own pocket and look out for you."
In related news, the Clayton County Police Department is now examining potential connections between the gas station shooting and two other incidents in Atlanta. As reported by 11Alive, a man was shot in the leg at a Northside Drive gas station in Atlanta where authorities noticed a black Dodge Journey, similar to the getaway vehicle from the earlier crime scene, including the missing license plates. The suspect in the Atlanta shooting also wore a blue shirt, black pants and, slide-style shoes matching the description of the individual involved in the Clayton County shooting. Following a stolen vehicle recovery and a brief chase, authorities apprehended a suspect near the Magic City strip club, though it has not been confirmed if this person is linked to the Clayton case.
The Clayton County Police Department has yet to disclose the identity of the victim formally, and the investigation into both the attempted robbery and the two Atlanta shootings is ongoing.
