In a ceremony held at the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, a modest group of five individuals celebrated the completion of rigorous training aimed at bolstering wildfire response efforts. These volunteers, now certified as Firefighter I, graduated from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Wildland Fire Academy, according to an announcement from the Sheriff's Office.
The five-week Academy, which started on March 5th, saw the cadets accumulate over 65 hours of tough training each, a blend of classroom education and direct, hands-on field exercises. Joseph Roybal, El Paso County Sheriff and Fire Warden, remarked on the graduates' preparedness to join the ranks of the Sheriff's Office Wildland Fire Unit. "Education and mitigation play a crucial role in wildfire prevention, and the addition of these newly certified volunteers will enable our Wildland Fire Unit to expand their efforts in keeping our community safe," he mentioned, as obtained by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
Roybal underscored El Paso County's haunting history with wildfires, particularly citing the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest Fires as stark reminders of the destruction they can unleash. "To this day, we have visual reminders and hear about the devastation caused by these fires—a true testament to the importance of fire mitigation, prevention, and education," he expressed, as per the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, during his address to the graduates.
Throughout their training at the Academy, which demanded the completion of several prerequisite online courses, the cadets were equipped with skills in a variety of critical areas. These included fire line construction, employment of emergency shelters, dealing with wildland terminology, understanding weather briefings, and mastering techniques for hose deployments and operating portable pumps. Field training at the South Meridian burn scars further added to their on-ground experience, as each cadet honed their knowledge of operating fire engines and understanding of basic medical triage, among other key competencies.
