Residents in Chicago's 3rd District are on alert as reports of recent armed robberies have surfaced, striking the Grand Crossing area in the dead of night. According to Chicago Police Department Community Alert, two incidents occurred in early April where victims were accosted by armed individuals demanding their possessions.
The first incident took place on the 6700 Block of S. Paxton Avenue on April 2nd at approximately 11:27 p.m. in South Shore, with an additional attack happening on the 5900 Block of S. Cornell Drive on April 3rd at around 1:50 a.m. near Jackson Park. The offenders, described as three African American males, 16-18 years old and donning black ski masks, wielded black handguns and fled on foot.
Community members are being urged to stay vigilant and take precautions. Simple actions like being aware of your surroundings and reporting any suspicious activity can be vital in preventing further incidents. The police also advise against confronting assailants, suggesting instead to focus on recalling any definitive physical traits that could aid in identification.
In the event of witnessing or falling victim to such an event, citizens are encouraged to not only contact authorities immediately but to preserve any available video surveillance and, if possible, wait for police while gathering witness information. The police have underscored this strategy: "Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police."
Those with information about these crimes or other suspicious activities can reach out directly to local law enforcement. Ensuring the safety and security of the community remains a collective effort, and timely reporting can serve as a crucial component in addressing and deterring criminal activity in the area.
