Clinton Eric Johnson, a 54-year-old Conyers man, has been handed a life sentence without the possibility for parole, plus an additional 25 years for a 2020 crime that resulted in the death of one man and the injury of his girlfriend. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, a DeKalb County jury convicted Johnson on charges that included Malice Murder and Felony Murder after a shooting incident at an apartment complex.
On the evening of November 5, 2020, DeKalb County police were summoned to the scene of a domestic violence case turned fatal. Found guilty on February 21, Johnson's charges, according to Atlanta News First, also include two counts of Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon or First Offender Probationer, and two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.
Reggie "Rico" Weatherly, a 30-year-old man who had been assisting the shooter's girlfriend to locate a new apartment to escape the abusive relationship, was shot dead by Johnson. Officers discovered his body within a Buick at the apartment complex, with gunshot wounds marking his back and torso. His actions, a testament to the perils that follow when one stands in defiance of the possessive grasp of domestic abusers, ultimately led to his premature demise.
Meanwhile, the woman, found shot at a nearby drug store, identified Johnson as her assailant. The violence was reportedly sparked by Johnson's suspicion of infidelity. After shooting Weatherly and dragging his girlfriend from her car, Johnson delayed her medical care, later dropping her at a drug store. Surveillance footage from the same store captured Johnson leaving her at the site as she, reeling from her wounds, managed to call 911, as told by FOX 5 Atlanta.
