According to an announcement issued by the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT), North Avenue NW was closed between Northside Drive NW and Walnut Street NW starting early Friday morning and is set to reopen today, at 6:00 p.m.
The closure, which was implemented to facilitate the removal of a heavy crane, has required detours that shuffled traffic onto neighboring streets – traffic southbound on Northside NW was redirected right onto Cameron Alexander Blvd then onto Walnut St NW before making a left to return onto North Ave NW, while westbound vehicles on North Ave NW had to make a left onto Northside NW, head right onto Cameron Alexander Blvd NW, zigzag right onto Walnut St NW, and swing a left to get back on North Ave NW. Meanwhile, eastbound traffic on North Ave NW was hustled right onto Walnut St NW, a quick left onto Cameron Alexander Blvd NW, another left onto Northside NW to find their way back to North Ave NW; and finally, those driving northbound on Northside Dr NW were instructed to make a left onto Cameron Alexander Blvd NW, a right onto Walnut St NW, and a left onto North Ave NW to reorient their journey.
For local pedestrians, the south side sidewalks of North Side Drive NW remained open, proving that not all paths were obstructed during this weekend's urban ballet of construction.
