A calm Wednesday morning in Crystal Lake took a sharp turn when a construction-related gas leak triggered an emergency response, affecting residents and travelers near Route 14. According to WGN News, the incident occurred at Water’s Edge, an apartment complex located close to the Three Oaks Recreation Area, where a construction crew reportedly struck a gas main around 6:30 a.m.
The leak prompted authorities to cordon off the area as a safety precaution. The Crystal Lake Police Department quickly issued a public advisory urging people to steer clear of the intersection at Route 14 and Crystal Point Drive. By 8:30 a.m., police confirmed to WGN News that “the pipe is no longer leaking,” signaling that the immediate threat had been mitigated.
Nicor Gas, the utility responsible for servicing the area, confirmed the gas main had been damaged during the morning’s construction activities. The company also told CBS News Chicago that repair operations were already underway, with a focus on swiftly restoring gas service to the affected apartment building.
Thankfully, there were no reports of injuries or fires stemming from the leak, offering reassurance to both residents and local officials. The fire department maintained a presence on-site to oversee safety procedures and ensure that no further risks developed.
