April is a time to turn the spotlight on an issue that quietly devastates lives away from the watchful eyes of society. As per a recent announcement, Cuyahoga County is stepping up, marking this month as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) will collaborate with partners to unveil a series of events striving to galvanize the community around this cause. "Our greatest community resource is our children, and it’s our collective responsibility to keep our children safe from abuse and harm," stated Jacqueline Fletcher, Director of the DCFS, trying to emphasize the role everyone plays in fostering safe havens for youth to prosper.

To kick off this initiative, DCFS has slated Wear Blue Day 2025 for Wednesday, April 9, inviting the county staff and residents alike to don blue garments in a show of unity for child abuse prevention. Advocates and participants are urged to share snapshots of their blue-clad selves on social platforms, hashtagging their efforts with #CuyahogaWearsBlue to spread the message even further.

Mid-month, DCFS is conducting a webinar focused on mandated reporting to shed light on how the community can act as the front line in child safety. Interested participants can attend this virtual event on Wednesday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m., though pre-registration is a must. For more details and to sign up, folks can visit the Cuyahoga County's website.

Highlighting the month's activities is the Child Abuse is Preventable 5k Walk, followed by a press conference scheduled for Wednesday, April 23. The event promises to stir dialogue on child protection, beginning at the Jane Edna Hunter building and concluding at the County's Administrative Headquarters. The press conference will feature the voices of key stakeholders, including Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne and Jacqueline Fletcher of DCFS. Accompanied by Jennifer Johnson from Canopy Child Advocacy Center, the aim is to engage the community in conversation and proactive measures to guard against child abuse. Registration for the walk is complimentary but required and can be done through the CAPM 5K 2025 registration page.

In addition to these events, the DCFS encourages community members to take actions that can ripple out to create impactful change. Supporting parents struggling by babysitting or connecting them with resources, fostering a child, and donating time or resources to organizations dedicated to children's welfare are among the suggested ways to contribute. If any individual suspects a child to be the victim of abuse or neglect, they are implored to report it to the DCFS or local law enforcement immediately.
