An incident in DeKalb County on a sleepy Saturday morning has left a police officer and two children hospitalized after a serious vehicle accident. According to the DeKalb County official news release, on April 5th, at around 7:22 a.m., a police officer was involved in a head-on collision on East Ponce de Leon Ave., situated between Rays Road and Hambrick Road, due to a third-party driver's alleged attempt to illegally overtake another vehicle on a double-yellow line.
The sequence of events, as pieced together by investigators, began when an eastbound driver made the risky decision to cross over into the opposite lane to pass a vehicle, in doing so the driver struck the intended vehicle to overpass which led to the unintended consequence this vehicle lost control, and was sent spiraling into a nearby tree, this was followed by an unfortunate head-on collision with the oncoming police officer's car. The officer along with two minors were promptly taken to local hospitals to treat what has been described as serious but non-life-threatening injuries; they remain in stable condition as per officials' latest updates.
While the investigation is still unfolding, no charges have been announced at this point.
