
Denver has handed down a substantial sentence to a local man following a shooting incident that resulted in one death and multiple injuries. Tyrell Braxton, 25, received a prison sentence of 194 months for being a felon in possession of ammunition, this marks a tough stance on gun crime and follows a jury trial that delved into the events of August 19, 2023, when Braxton was involved in a shooting during a large gathering at 28th and Welton Street, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice.
On that fateful morning, the collective peace shattered by multiple gunshots, the Denver Police responded to the scene where a harrowing eighty-one spent shell casings from eight different firearms were found, Braxton was caught on video firing into the crowd, resulting in one fatality and injuries to two women, after which he continued shooting while crossing the street, adding to the horror and chaos of that morning, he had only been released from prison in April 2023, after a previous offense for unlawful possession of a firearm and was still under federal supervised release at the time. "Tyrell Braxton’s wanton violence took another’s life," Acting United States Attorney for the District of Colorado J. Bishop Grewell stated, as obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice, in regards to the case and the impact of the violence perpetrated.
In response to the sentencing, law enforcement and prosecution bodies have expressed a joint commitment to community safety and the pursuit of violent crime. The Denver Police Department has emphasized its successful collaboration with federal agencies, praising the efforts of all involved in bringing Braxton to justice. Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas lauded the partnership’s role in demonstrating the dangers Braxton posed to the community, "The Denver Police Department appreciates our great partnership with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives," he said, as per U.S. Department of Justice, recognizing the part played by the Project Safe Neighborhoods program. The ATF’s Special Agent in Charge, Brent Beavers, affirmed a "commitment to eradicating violent criminals from our communities."
