Businesses in the Douglas neighborhood are on high alert after a series of break-ins, as reported by the Chicago Police Department. The notice issued to local proprietors comes in the wake of burglaries targeting closed businesses. The perpetrators gained entry by shattering the glass on the front door before absconding with property from inside.
The crimes spanned a timeframe beginning April 5 and concluded with the latest reported incident on the morning of April 7. Two locations were hit: one on the 300 block of E. 35th St. and another between the 200 block of E. 31st St. Police are actively looking to potentially identify those responsible, urging business owners to stay vigilant and to take immediate action should they be confronted by a similar threat. To better keep themselves safe, establishment owners should "keep the perimeter of your property well-lit," and "report suspicious activity immediately," the police advised.
Recommendations from law enforcement include securing all doors and windows assertively, repairing any that show signs of damage without delay, and ensuring the quick preservation of video surveillance footage that may capture the incidents.
While no suspects are currently in custody, detectives are encouraging community members to join in safeguarding their blocks by being observant of their surroundings. "If you are a victim, do not touch anything. Call police immediately," urged the Chicago Police Department. And in a scenario where witnesses are present, they suggest to "request contact information" promptly for follow-up.
