Riviera Beach has ushered in former city councilman Douglas Lawson as its new mayor, following a City Council vote that ended with a narrow 3-2 majority. The appointment of Lawson, who boasts a six-year tenure on the council, was effective immediately, as reported by WPBF. Lawson was selected from a pool of 11 candidates vying for the mayoral position and is now slated to lead the city through March 2027.
During the pivotal city council meeting, each nominee presented their case within a strict five-minute window. Lawson, however, stood out as the only nominee to be put forward. Previously, in a turn of events prior to his mayoral appointment, Lawson was removed from the ballot due to financial discrepancies which were highlighted in a CBS12 report back in December.
The freshly appointed mayor didn't waste any time outlining his priorities as he addressed the City Council. In his speech, which was captured by WPBF, Lawson honed in on "fixing infrastructure, strengthening public safety, and driving economic development" as the main arenas he intends to improve during his term. This focus might resonate with residents who have long voiced concerns about the state of their community's framework and well-being.
Lawson's journey to the mayoral office has not been without setbacks, as his removal from the official ballot last December demonstrates. Nonetheless, the City Council voted to appoint him as mayor, tasking him with leading Riviera Beach through a new phase of development. His prior experience on the council and the priorities he outlined may have contributed to the narrow margin by which he was selected.
