Oklahoma State University (OSU) has officially named Dr. Jim Hess as its new President, after serving an interim role. The announcement came Monday, with House Speaker Kyle Hilbert, R-Bristow, expressing his endorsement of Hess's appointment. In a statement obtained by the Oklahoma House website, Hilbert said, "I am thrilled to hear of the official appointment of Dr. Jim Hess as the next President of OSU." He praised Hess for his experience and commitment to student success, as well as his partnership with the state Legislature during his interim tenure.
Hess took over as an interim president after his predecessor stepped down and has since been working closely with legislative partners. The House Speaker commended the decisiveness of the OSU Board of Regents, stating, "Having reliable, long-term leadership in place will allow the institution and the general public to buy into a long-term vision of making Oklahoma State University the preeminent land grant University in the country." This official appointment is seen as a strategic move to bring stability and foster growth at OSU.
The University and its stakeholders have been navigating a transition period since Hess stepped in. Acknowledging the importance of consistency at the helm, Hilbert remarked in his endorsement, "His official appointment brings stability to the university as it prepares for continued growth and future success." The eagerness for a clear direction and steady hands at OSU's wheel could not be overstated.
The OSU Board of Regents moved to appoint Hess without a prolonged search process, citing his contributions to the university. Hess is tasked with continuing efforts to improve student outcomes and enhance OSU’s national standing. Hilbert noted the advantages of consistent leadership and emphasized the importance of a long-term vision for the institution. University leadership and Oklahoma’s legislative body have emphasized a shared focus on future goals.
