The University of Tennessee Health Science Center's College of Dentistry recently appointed Jon Ryder, DDS, MS, as the new executive associate dean. Dr. Ryder brings a significant track record of leadership in the field and is expected to oversee the daily operations of the college. According to a statement by Dean Ken Tilashalski, obtained by UTHSC News, "His exceptional leadership in dental education and international service will be an incredible asset to our college."
Ryder has amassed a significant amount of experience in the academic arena, having served in various leadership roles at the University of New England College of Dental Medicine and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. His role is seen as pivotal as the college gears up for its 2025 Commission on Dental Accreditation site visit, amidst implementing a strategic plan that introduces a new curriculum and renews the $53 million Healthy Smiles Initiative. Furthermore, the college aims at bolstering its clinical reach statewide, with planned expansions into Savannah and Kingsport.
The college's new strategic vision — "To take care of people" — and mission statement — "Transforming lives and oral health through community engagement, educational excellence, developing professionals, patient care, and research discovery" — are at the heart of Ryder's ambitions for the institution. Dr. Ryder expressed his enthusiasm for the various projects at hand: "There are a lot of exciting initiatives happening, ranging from designing a new curriculum to continuing the work of the Healthy Smiles Initiative," he told UTHSC News.
With qualifications including a Bachelor of Arts from Augustana College and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Dr. Ryder also holds a Master of Science in orofacial pain/oral medicine from the University of Southern California Ostrow School of Dentistry. His reputation extends beyond academics to humanitarian efforts, particularly in Cambodia, where he has contributed significantly to dental education and healthcare services. Ryder's commitment to service is underscored by his work in establishing the first dental simulation clinic in the country.
When not strengthening the foundations of dental education or offering his services internationally, Dr. Ryder enjoys life as a family man, musician, and avid photographer, with his travel photographs having graced the pages of publications such as Asian Geographic Magazine.
