The City of Dunwoody recently spotlighted two local champions of environmental stewardship, Donna Burt and Ark Coffeehaus, with the 2024 Sustainability Hero Awards. According to a city announcement, these awards, which have been recognizing leaders in sustainability since 2012, were presented during a council meeting this past Monday. Burt, an individual committed to sustainable living and community service, and Ark Coffeehaus, a business leading in eco-friendly practices, were selected based on nominations from the Dunwoody community and the decision of the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee.
Colin Mey, Chair of the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee, emphasized the importance of such individuals and businesses leading the charge in sustainability. "Sustainability is not just a goal - it’s a legacy built by those who lead with action," he said, recognizing the efforts of both honorees. Dedicated to her garden and to teaching children about nature, Donna Burt's work stands out in Dunwoody, including her role in replanting trees post-tornado through the Replant the Dunwoody Forest initiative. Having grown up during times when resources were scarce, Burt lives out a philosophy born of necessity. "Our resources are precious, and waste simply goes against my upbringing," she told the City of Dunwoody.
Ark Coffeehaus, on the other hand, earned the business award through its dedication to composting and regenerative farming. The local coffee spot not only sources ingredients locally for its offerings but has also managed to integrate its waste as a resource for its owners' family farm. "Ark Coffeehaus is honored to be this year’s recipient of the business Sustainability Hero Award by practicing the law of return: what we take from the earth we work to return and replenish," co-owner Priscilla Wells said, as per the city's statement.
Beyond just handing out awards, the City of Dunwoody Sustainability Committee, which meets monthly, operates on a broader mission to educate and to encourage both the community and the city to minimize their environmental impact through improved resource efficiency. The recent recognition of Burt and Ark Coffeehaus signals Dunwoody's commitment to this mission and highlights the local strides being made in sustainable practices.
