Eden Prairie residents have a new scam to be wary of — imposters posing as local police are trying to swindle community members out of their money. The Eden Prairie Police Department (EPPD) has issued an alert, warning of these fraudulent calls where scammers claim there's an outstanding warrant or fine, demanding payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency.
According to the EPPD, the scam involves a phone call where the victim is duped into believing they are speaking with actual law enforcement officials, such as Chief Matt Sackett. The criminals are employing a particularly cunning tactic, manipulating caller ID to display the real phone number of the EPPD, hoping to add a layer of authenticity to their deceitful scheme.
Fortuitously, at this time, the police have not been notified of any financial losses by community members to this scam. In a statement obtained by content.govdelivery.com, they advise residents that "no law enforcement agency will ask you for money, gift cards or cryptocurrency." The EPPD's capsule of wisdom for those who encounter these scams? Hang up immediately, do not engage, and certainly, do not send money or gift cards.
If you find yourself targeted by these unscrupulous callers, the EPPD encourages you to contact them at 952-949-6200 to report the incident.
