Eileen Higgins, Miami-Dade County Commissioner, has announced her candidacy for Miami's mayoral race. After being re-elected to the County Commission last year, Higgins is now aiming for the mayor's office, bringing her experience in public service to the campaign.
Higgins, a Democrat, has served on the County Commission since 2018. According to Florida Politics, her platform includes expanding affordable housing, improving public transit, flood prevention, environmental protections, and support for law enforcement.
Higgins faces competition from former Miami City Commissioner Ken Russell, also a Democrat. If elected, Higgins would become the first Democrat mayor of Miami in over a decade, as per Miami Herald. While the mayor's role is nonpartisan, Higgins emphasizes results and representation over political party affiliation.
With a solid fundraising base, including $480,000 in her political committee, Higgins has the financial backing to make an impact on the race. However, her candidacy could create a vacancy on the Miami-Dade County Commission, potentially affecting the current Democratic majority.
