El Paso is mourning the loss of two individuals who succumbed to injuries in a vehicular accident early Thursday morning, marking the city's 18th and 19th traffic fatalities of the year. A preliminary investigation by the El Paso Police Special Traffic Investigators suggests that high speed may have played a role in the tragic incident that occurred on the 8300 block of Gateway North. According to the investigators, both a Dodge Ram and a Toyota Avalon were traveling northbound when they inexplicably lost control. As detailed by the El Paso Police Department, the Dodge Ram struck a curb before veering off the road and rolling over.
Concurrently, the Toyota Avalon veered to the right and collided with an electrical line pole at the intersection of Edgar Park and Gateway North, before rolling over and striking a large tree. Tragically, both passengers in the Avalon died at the scene. Investigators disclosed that none of the occupants in the Avalon were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The driver of the Avalon and both occupants of the Dodge Ram were taken to a nearby hospital. With these fatalities, El Paso's traffic-related deaths have risen above last year's count of 14 at this same time, indicating a concerning upward trend in roadway perils.
Authorities have mentioned that speed and possibly alcohol might be determining factors in the collision, although further details are still to be confirmed as the investigation is ongoing. The community's concern over traffic safety has been reignited by this incident, as it highlights the dire consequences of reckless driving and the critical importance of seatbelt use. The increase in traffic deaths this year serves as a grim reminder of the hazards present on our roads, especially when basic safety measures are overlooked or ignored.
