An Ellis County native, Whatley carries a legacy in law enforcement as the nephew of Constable Roy Callender Jr., and his readiness for the new role was bolstered by completing the Navarro College Police Academy earlier this year; Sheriff Brad Norman expressed pride in Whatley’s background and the familial connection that underscores a lineage of service within the county, demonstrating a continuity in the community's guardianship.
