John C. Byrd III, a former detective with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his wife. This comes eight months after his initial arrest, according to FOX 10 Phoenix on Monday. The Pinal County Sheriff's Office has been handling the case since Byrd's indictment due to his ties with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. The incident occurred on July 31, 2024, when police responded to a welfare check and found Byrd's wife deceased on the bedroom floor.
Authorities were alerted when a friend reported the victim missing after she missed a routine gym class. Her children later discovered that their mother had not been seen all day and found her bedroom door locked. John Byrd, who was found operating the victim's vehicle, confessed to the killing, stating, "a switch just flipped" during a heated argument with his wife, which led him to strangle her, as reported by ABC15.
Byrd admitted during his detainment and questioning by Mesa Police that stress from his home and work life contributed to his violent actions. Following his arrest, Byrd was removed from his position at the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, and the case was handed over to the Pinal County Attorney's Office for prosecution. On Monday, Byrd changed his plea, and his sentencing is scheduled for June 13. He faces a prison sentence of 10 to 25 years for the crime, as mentioned by FOX 10 Phoenix.
