
Tragedy struck on I-680, south of Stone Valley Road near Alamo, yesterday when a detached wheel from a Ford Van collided with a Toyota Tundra, causing a fatal incident. According to a social media post by CHP Contra Costa, officers responded to the crash at approximately 1:35 PM. The Ford Van was traveling northbound when its left rear wheel came off, crossed over the median unexpectedly, and hit a southbound Toyota Tundra. Tragically, the Toyota driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The cause that led to the wheel's detachment is still under investigation, and the driver of the Ford Van reportedly cooperates with the authorities. "Our preliminary investigation indicates a Ford Van was traveling on I-680 northbound, just south of Stone Valley Road, when, for reasons still under investigation, its left rear wheel became detached," CHP Contra Costa stated. As part of the investigation, traffic was disrupted in both directions of I-680, with closures in the southbound slow lane reopened at around 3:24 p.m. and northbound lanes reopened at 4:21 p.m.
As officials continue to piece together the events that culminated in this calamity, they have publicly appealed to witnesses.
