
A high-speed chase in Georgia that originated in Cook County led to an officer-involved shooting and the death of a Florida woman, according to an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The chase, which began over a speeding incident, ended with a dramatic confrontation on Interstate 75, as reported by the GBI.
The incident, which took place in the early hours of April 4, saw deputies from Turner County Sheriff's Office involved in a pursuit after the Cook County Sheriff's Office attempted to pull over a Cadillac sedan going over 100 mph, the car chase spanned several miles before ending near Exit 109 in Dooly County. Law enforcement then executed a PIT maneuver to halt the Cadillac; thereafter, when deputies approached the vehicle the situation escalated as the driver opened fire, injuring one officer, the officers on the scene returned fire, resulting in the woman's death.
GBI has identified the deceased as Paige M. Newsum, 57, of Bradenton, Florida. The injured deputy was transported to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under active GBI investigation, and the findings will be forwarded to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
