In a recent profile concluding Community College Month, El Paso Community College (EPCC) showcases a success story of transformation and opportunity. Jose Ordonez, a former inmate at La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution, credits EPCC for offering him a second chance. Breaking the cycle of recidivism, he obtained his associate degree in HVAC Residential in 2021 and later earned several certifications, culminating in his Sheet Metal Journeyman License in June 2024. According to EPCC News, Ordonez is now a member of Sheet Metal Union Local 49 and travels for work between Albuquerque and Las Cruces, New Mexico.
This transformation was made possible through a partnership program between EPCC and La Tuna Federal Facilities, which began in 2024 with a five-year agreement. The program is designed to teach incarcerated students welding skills to help secure employment post-release. Ordonez's commitment to education and his career path were met with enthusiasm and support from both the college and the correctional staff. "It was wild, we actually came to the college Monday through Friday. We were here to go through our courses, and I was able to get my award for the HVAC program and also helped me a lot in my life," Ordonez told EPCC News, reflecting on his unique educational journey.

It's a tale that garners attention not just for its triumph but for highlighting a pathway that could reduce the chances of recidivism. "He was a good student, hardworking and one of the best students in that class," said Manuel Torres, EPCC HVAC Professor and Coordinator of the program, as per EPCC News.
