The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently looking into an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 24-year-old Atlanta man, Damario Smith. The incident took place in Fulton County, and the GBI's inquiry comes at the behest of the Fulton County Police Department (FCPD), who were involved in the fatal encounter.
According to details provided by GBI's press release, the situation unfolded when FCPD officers responded to a call about suspicious persons on the 3500 block of Martin Luther King Drive in Atlanta. Upon the officers' arrival, several individuals fled, prompting a chase. Smith, amongst those who ran, was pursued by officers to his car across the street.
Reports indicate that Smith did not adhere to the officers' instructions and, upon entering his vehicle, produced a handgun. The officers subsequently discharged their weapons, striking Smith, who was later found with the weapon in his possession. He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident. This case will undergo a rigorous investigation by the GBI, their findings will ultimately be handed to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
