The Georgia State Senate approved legislation on Friday last week to transfer control of the Barrow County Airport to the county government. The bill, SB 331, was passed by the Georgia House last month and is now set to be signed by Governor Brian Kemp.
According to the Barrow County release, local officials, including Barrow County Chairman Pat Graham, expressed support for the move. Graham praised Senators Clint Dixon, Frank Ginn, and Majority Leader Chuck Efstration for their leadership on the legislation. The airport, established in 1958, became the Barrow County Airport Authority in 1986, ending city control.
The transition to county control is seen as a step toward improving transportation infrastructure and promoting economic development in the region. Barrow County Manager Srikanth Yamala emphasized the county's commitment to investing in the airport and supporting local growth.
The legislation follows a resolution passed by the Board of Commissioners on January 28 to dissolve the existing airport authority and make the airport a standalone county department.
