A routine response to a pedestrian-related crash by a Goodyear Police sergeant took an unexpected turn early Thursday morning when an attempted traffic stop escalated into an assault. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. on Interstate 10 as the sergeant spotted a speeding vehicle while on route to the crash site at Litchfield and McDowell Roads.
The driver, now identified as 28-year-old Cameron Doyle, eventually stopped his vehicle near Dysart Road, but not before deliberately delaying yielding to the officer's signals. As reported by AZ Family, upon the vehicle being stopped, Doyle allegedly assaulted the sergeant. The confrontation led to Doyle's arrest and subsequent charges of aggravated assault on law enforcement and other traffic-related offenses.
The incident caused a temporary restriction of traffic on I-10, but the thoroughfare has since been fully reopened. The altercation left the sergeant and an additional officer with minor injuries, shedding light on the hazards law enforcement officers face even in seemingly routine scenarios.
