Grand Prairie, Texas, is stepping into the spotlight as the new central hub for Major League Cricket (MLC), following officials' announcement that the league's headquarters will relocate from California to the city's beloved cricket stadium. "We are thrilled Major League Cricket has decided to bring its full-time headquarters to our city," Mayor Ron Jensen was quoted as saying during a press conference covered by the City of Grand Prairie. The Mayor emphasized the significance of the move, particularly given the league's relocation from its previous California base.
Residents of Grand Prairie will soon enjoy the thrill of cricket with 12 regular-season games scheduled between June 20 and June 29 at their local stadium. The MLC isn't stopping there, as the playoffs and the anticipated Championship Final on July 13 are also slated to take place in Grand Prairie. "We’re delighted to continue making Grand Prairie the home of Cognizant Major League Cricket," stated Johnny Grave, CEO of MLC, demonstrating his commitment to the area, as reported by the city's news release.
The economic benefits of the sports tourism that cricket brings to the area are undeniable. An economic impact report, analyzing data from the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was held partly in Grand Prairie, shows a tangible boost to the local economy. According to the report, with figures obtained from Nielsen Sports, the World Cup events generated a staggering $100.4 million, driven largely by fan-associated spending and the subsequent financial ripple effect throughout Texas. Mayor Jensen credits the sport for elevating Grand Prairie's profile on a global scale.
With the 2025 MLC season's opening match scheduled for June 12 in Oakland, CA, enthusiasm is running high. Grand Prairie's position as a central figure in cricket's growth in the U.S. is further emphasized by Anurag Jain, Co-owner of the Texas Super Kings, who expressed his excitement over the headquarters move. "This move reflects our commitment to growing the sport in the U.S. while bringing meaningful economic opportunities to North Texas," he stated, as detailed by the city's press release.
In a nod to inclusivity and the sport's reach, an international match between the Women's U.S. and Zimbabwe cricket teams will be held at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium today. The community is encouraged to engage with the sport, as entry to this match will be freely available. For cricket fans looking to catch more of the action during the regular season, ticket discounts of up to 60% are on offer through the end of April.
