The Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office has ruled the fatal shooting of a man by a Lockland police officer on Interstate 75 to have been justified. The decision comes following a multi-agency chase of a stolen vehicle that culminated in the incident on March 19.
Officials disclosed the deceased as Samuel Munyarutete, 48, from Woodlawn, whose encounter with law enforcement on the highway took a tragic turn. As per the Local12 report, Munyarutete was seen holding a metal rod or pipe and did not comply with the officer's demands to drop it. A taser was initially used before the officer discharged his firearm, an action that Prosecutor Connie Pillich justified, noting uncertainties around Munyarutete's connection to the stolen car or if a language barrier may have influenced his response to police commands.
A report from FOX19 confirmed that the chase involved police jurisdictions from two counties and ended around 2:26 a.m. near the Glendale-Milford Road exit in Evendale. The suspects from the crashed stolen vehicle had fled, triggering a search that led to the fatal shooting on the shoulder of I-75.
At a press conference, it was further detailed that no charges will be pursued against the officer involved. The Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office presented findings from a review of the shooting, as reported by WLWT. In the early morning chaos, officers had to quickly ascertain rapidly unfolding events, ultimately engaging with Munyarutete, who was perceived to pose a threat. "Officers say he had something in his hand and was refusing commands," reflecting on the tense moments before the Lockland officer seemingly had to resort to the use of lethal force.
