A pedestrian tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident on Boulder Highway at East Tropicana Avenue, marking the 42nd traffic-related death this year in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction. The fateful event transpired last Saturday, just before the cusp of night, at about 8:35 PM, according to a report from LVMPD.
Surveillance footage and findings at the scene depicted a pedestrian, a 67-year-old male whose name is pending notification, attempting to cross from west to east in a marked crosswalk. Despite the lights advising otherwise, the pedestrian entered the street. A southbound 2007 Toyota Corolla, driven by 68-year-old Maria Coto of Las Vegas, who exhibited no signs of impairment, collided with the pedestrian. Thrown onto the roadway, the pedestrian was subsequently run over by an unidentified vehicle, suspected to be a white Volkswagen Passat from models between 2012 and 2022. Although the Toyota driver stopped to assist, the second vehicle left the scene, continuing southwards with its driver's fate and identity both shrouded in mystery.
The man, despite life-saving efforts, was pronounced dead at the scene. The LVMPD Collision Investigation Section is now investigating the incident and is urging anyone with information to contact them at (702) 828-4088 or Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555. Tips may lead to a resolution and a cash reward.
