In a concerning update on local firearm safety, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has reported a significant rise in accidental self-inflicted gunshot injuries. According to a social media post from IMPD News, there's been a 113% increase in such incidents. A deeply troubling aspect is that 24% of those injured were under the age of 18, highlighting a grave issue among youth having access to firearms.
March saw an alarming 220% rise in self-inflicted accidental shootings over the same month the previous year, with 16 incidents reported by IMPD. This trend is concerning given the preventable nature of these incidents. In similar vein, Indianapolis has witnessed a 167% surge in the number of juveniles injured because of these accidents. The available data points to a pressing need for enhanced safety measures and education concerning firearms.
Amidst these disquieting statistics, the IMPD is urging gun owners to take individual responsibility for firearm safety. In response to the escalating injuries, and in an effort to combat the trend, the department has highlighted the availability of free gun locks. These preventative tools can be collected at Indianapolis Public Library locations, a resource aiming to help residents ensure a safer environment at home.
In their announcement, IMPD underscored the preventability of accidental shootings and called on the community to unite in efforts to reduce these incidents. "Accidental shootings are preventable," the department stated, pressing the importance of proactive protection measures.
