Attorney General Todd Rokita is ramping up his campaign against nuisance robocalls, putting voice service providers on notice for their supposed involvement in perpetuating these illegal communications that plague residents with scams and unsolicited messages, according to the Indiana Attorney General's statement released recently. The Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force which includes a bipartisan group of 51 Attorneys General is turning the screws, having identified nine specific providers that may be wading into murky legal waters by allowing these calls to pass through their networks.
These companies are not small fish in the pond, they've been slapped with hundreds of traceback notices, signaling that their infrastructures could serve as conduits for a gamut of scams from government impersonations to bogus Amazon charge alerts, "Hoosiers are fed up with these relentless robocalls that disrupt their lives and, worse, try to steal their hard-earned money or personal information," as the Indiana Attorney General's release, highlighting the disruptive nature of such calls and the urgency to protect Indiana families from financial predation.
Rokita's office has a track record of aggression towards robocall violators, employing lawsuits, settlements, and hefty penalties that tally up to millions of dollars imposed on companies breaking the rules. The letters dispatched to the providers in question aren't just holiday greetings, they demand an end to the spread of illegal robocalls and have thrown the spotlight on these providers to federal law enforcement partners, including the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Among the list of companies receiving warnings are heavy-hitters like Global Net Holdings, All Access Telecom and Lingo Telecom, each buried under an avalanche of traceback notices for calls that range from COVID financial relief schemes to phony credit card rate reductions, the task force is not playing games and has shared its concerns with the FCC. Rokita's crusade began back in 2021 with a groundbreaking lawsuit against Startel Communication LLC and the dismantling of the massive Associated Community Services telefunding operation that conned millions from consumers under the guise of charity.
With these recent maneuvers, Indiana continues to stake its claim as a vanguard in the nationwide fight against robocalls. Working in concert with the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission, Rokita's office is a formidable force against the robocall scourge, according to the task force's ongoing collaboration efforts outlined in the same Indiana Attorney General's official statement.
