As the Indianapolis community comes together to honor the memory of IMPD officer Anderson Vilma, they will also experience significant traffic disruptions due to his funeral procession today. Officer Vilma, whose bravery was not limited to the streets but extended into a personal fight with cancer, died on April 3. His funeral is scheduled for today, with visitation from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery, as reported by WISH-TV. This will be followed by a celebration of life at the cemetery.
According to WTHR, the procession is set to begin at noon, starting from Crown Hill Cemetery and making its way to IMPD's East District headquarters. Residents can expect to see the procession travel south on Clarendon Road, then turning east on 38th Street, and subsequently taking Shadeland Avenue south, followed by a turn east onto 10th Street. It will proceed south on North Shortridge Road, then go west into the main entrance of Get Fit, move northbound in front of the gym, and continue westbound in front of IMPD East District headquarters.
The route details provided by WISH-TV also indicate that from 38th Street the procession will enter into East District HQ at 201 Shadeland Ave., thus bringing to a close this portion of the day's tribute. Traffic in the vicinity will be disrupted during this time, and drivers are encouraged to plan accordingly to avoid delays.
The funeral procession will culminate at the East District Headquarters with a last 10-42 call for officer Vilma, honorably marking the end of his duty and service. This tradition is relayed as "the last radio call made for an officer who has passed away or is retiring," as described by IndyStar. People planning to attend or observe the procession are advised to assemble early due to anticipated traffic constraints.
