In the somber quiet of a Knoxville night, tragedy struck on North Broadway. A man was killed, and another faces charges following a devastating crash early this morning. According to a social media post from the Knoxville Police Department, the incident occurred around midnight. Dispatched first responders arrived on the scene to confront a horrific sight—a black Jeep flipped on its side, engulfed in flames.
The initial investigation revealed that the collision took place as a Kia sedan made a turn into the Kenjo gas station, inadvertently into the path of the Jeep. The passenger of the Jeep, a 22-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep's driver, identified as 22-year-old William Gavigan of Knoxville, displayed several signs of intoxication and was transported to UT Medical Center for treatment. He has been charged with driving under the influence.
The driver of the Kia, a 32-year-old man, refused transportation to a hospital. "KPD crash reconstruction investigators responded to the scene and are leading the investigation into the crash," the department's statement noted.
